So first and foremost, there is progress here!
Second, I believe you were right: Shading has to do with it, but also the geometry of your lines. This reminded me of something Jeff told me four or five years ago, which is that he learned to give dimension in drawing from comics, from their lines and shading techniques. As a child he was a big fan and would trace and study the shading techniques they used, which although relatively simple, were very effective.

Again--I compared Cur d'automne to you other works in the gallery, and you definitely achieve more depth here.
